RATS Expansion Financial instability has not kept RATS from looking to expand in its future. The organization is looking to kick start a county-wide public transportation system where vans would operate on a deviated fixed route with specific stops in Lexington, Buena Vista, and the county. The system would take passengers to routine locations such as Wal-Mart, the Food Pantry, and the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic. In addition, a dispatch would also run and riders three-quarters of a mile from a stop could request a pickup for an additional charge. RATS will continue its services to those who are elderly, disabled, and cannot drive, while the public transportation system would be open to anyone in the community. Under the future system, local fares would be lower than the current rates. It would also allow RATS to provide more out of town trips for its riders. The organization is waiting to hear back on grants that will allow the project to be funded. In addition, we would like to see more individual contributions to make this vision a reality. You can help our efforts for expansion in two ways. First, you can donate to RATS. Financial stability is crucial to maintain present operations as well to expand in the future. Second, you can stop by the RATS office, or look for booths at Wal-Mart and Kroger in Lexington, and fill out a Transportation Survey. We would like to hear citizen voices so that we can better tailor this service to meet the needs of the community.
