In the 2005-2006 fiscal year, RATS provided 10,394 rides for Rockbridge
area residents and traveled 222,665 miles, with a total operating
cost of $313,907. RATS knowingly loses money on each ride it
provides but does so to keep fares low. As illustrated by this
chart, one quarter of RATS' revenue comes from grants and private
donations. Contributions from the community keep RATS "on the
road."
Our main
concern continues to be finding means to subsidize trips for the
many people in our area who are not on Medicaid. Donations to
RATS help keep rider fares for those trips affordable. Rising
costs of gasoline also increase the heavy financial burden incurred
by RATS. Besides fuel, another huge expense is insurance--the
commercial package plus workman's comp totals $32,550.
RATS is an invaluable service to many members of the
community. It provides mobility, security, and a higher quality of
life for those who cannot drive. Although we receive some grants
from the local government, RATS is not directly subsidized by the
city. We rely heavily on contributions from regular people and
organizations, like you, in
Rockbridge County. If you would like to donate money to RATS,
simply download and print a donation form and mail it to the
RATS office.
